When it comes down to it, all you want to know is – does CBD work?

And if so, what does it work for, where’s the evidence to suggest this, and how can you separate the claims from the facts?

At HelpingPot, we believe in providing our community with the best information possible to help you make the right decision when it comes to CBD.

In this guide, we will help you learn:

does cbd work - how it works

How Does CBD Oil Work?

Before we get into whether CBD works as well as people claim, let’s first get a clear understanding of how it works. This will help you understand exactly why people use it for such a wide variety of reasons.

Without getting too in-depth for this article, here is how CBD works:

  • CBD is what’s called a cannabinoid → these are chemical compounds that exist naturally in 26 known species of plants including hemp and cannabis – learn more about cannabinoids here
  • Cannabinoids affect your Endocannabinoid System (ECS) → this body system was only discovered in the 1990’s and operates throughout your brain and the rest of your body to regulate (mood, appetite, sleep, reproduction, pain, inflammation, and more)
  • CBD can be absorbed multiple ways depending on the type of CBD you take, you may change your method of absorption (skin, sublingual, lungs, blood stream, ingestion) – learn more about the types of CBD here
  • Sometimes CBD can take a while to build up in your system → some people can be deficient in cannabinoids, which may cause CBD to not work initially, as it builds up in your system – learn more about how to take CBD here
  • CBD works for a number of ailments → because the ECS affects so many key systems in your body, cannabidiol (CBD) can be used to help with a number of ailments and symptoms from inflammation, pain, and even stress and anxiety – learn more about the benefits of CBD here

does cbd oil work - ultimate guide

Does CBD Oil Work?

Honestly, it all depends. There are a few key factors that will determine how well CBD oil and other CBD products work for you:

  1. Tolerance – Some people have a higher tolerance to CBD than others, meaning it may take them a larger dose to get the same results. It could also mean that they may have to take CBD longer before they begin experiencing results.
  2. Dose – CBD is measured in milligrams (mg). Typically, 5-15mg is the recommended daily starting dose for people with low to mild symptoms. More severe symptoms and ailments can require larger doses to get the same results.
  3. Body chemistry – Everyone’s body is different. We all digest and absorb things differently. Some people may be on medications that make CBD a bad option, while others may take well to it. This is one of the reasons speaking to your doctor before trying cannabidiol is important.
  4. Ailments and symptoms – Depending on the type of symptoms you are suffering from, you may need higher doses or a specific type of CBD to get relief to a certain area of your body.
  5. Consistency – Just like medications and other supplements, in order to get the best results, it’s highly recommended that you take CBD on a consistent basis.
  6. Quality – The FDA has yet to regulate CBD, so there is a lot of room out there for companies to skimp on quality and fib a bit about what’s in their products. Purchasing from the best brands will help ensure you’re getting what you’re paying for.
  7. Method of ingestion – Your body may react differently to different types of CBD. It’s important to try a few different methods of ingestion over a long period of time to find out what works best for you.

Basically, just like many medications and supplements, the results you get from CBD will depend on a combination of these factors.

Overall, CBD has received positive reviews from millions of Americans who use it to help with dozens of health conditions and ailments, as well as for daily support.

However, there are still a lot of pieces missing in this puzzle. Because CBD has only been legal in the United States since 2014, researchers have a lot of catching up to do to determine the real effects of CBD. So far, preliminary research has shown a lot of positive results.

Ultimately what we do know about the benefits of CBD is that it helps with

  • inflammation
  • pain management
  • managing stress and anxiety
  • sleep and insomnia
  • cancer-related symptoms
  • certain types of epilepsy and seizure disorders

Recent research has also suggested that CBD may also help with

  • arthritis
  • schizophrenia
  • tumors
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • heart health
  • brain health
  • acne treatment and prevention

For a more in-depth look into these benefits, this guide can help you learn more. Later in this article, we will also be discussing some studies and evidence proving the benefits of CBD.

Does CBD Oil Work for Anxiety?

Here’s what we know about the potential benefits of CBD for people with anxiety:

  • CBD may benefit people with social anxiety – A 2017 study showed that cannabidiol helped to decrease anxiety in people with social fear or anxiety when it came to public speaking.
  • Medium doses of CBD can help with anxiety levels – This 2019 study showed that 79.2% of subjects experienced a continuous reduction in anxiety levels while taking between 25-75mg of CBD daily.
  • CBD can reduce anxiety and fear related to a number of disorders – This 2015 study found that “Preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviors relevant to multiple disorders, including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD, and SAD, with a notable lack of anxiogenic effects.”

Other studies done on animals have shown similar findings. The overwhelming conclusion is that there needs to be more research to officially prove that CBD works for anxiety. However, initial research has shown a lot of promise, and thousands of Americans regard CBD as a more natural way to manage stress levels and anxiety.

Does CBD Oil Work for Inflammation?

Yes. To be short, we know that CBD affects the Endocannabinoid System in our body, which strongly influences inflammation as well as pain management. Here is some recent research that supports the use of CBD to reduce inflammation:

  • CBD reduces inflammation for a number of diseases – This 2011 study shows some of the ways that cannabidiol helps to reduce inflammation in the body that is related to many common diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and otosclerosis.
  • CBD was shown to reduce inflammation related to pancreatitis in mice – A 2013 study shows the important role that cannabidiol plays in not just the reduction of inflammation, but also the management and reduction of tumors.
  • CBD reduced inflammation related to acute lung injury – This 2012 study shows proof that CBD can be used to reduce inflammation in a number of ways for a number of disorders. Specifically, this study displayed its ability to help with inflammation in the lungs due to respiratory disorders and diseases.
  • CBD reduces intestinal inflammation – A 2011 study showed that cannabidiol reduces intestinal inflammation through the control of the neuroimmune axis.

These studies are definitely supportive of CBD being a great solution for combating inflammation. They have also lead to more research that is currently being done on a daily basis to prove the benefits of CBD.

The beautiful thing about cannabidiol is that it has very mild side effects and no known toxic effects in humans. On top of that, it’s affordable and legal in the United States. Each year, thousands of Americans use CBD to help with their inflammation and inflammatory diseases.

Does CBD Oil Work for Pain?

Believe it or not, a majority of people who take CBD take it for pain management.

  • CBD targets pain receptors to suppress chronic and persistent pain – This 2012 study found that cannabidiol and other cannabinoids help to treat and mediate chronic pain very effectively.
  • 62% of CBD users reported using it for a medical condition – This study found that a majority of them used it for anxiety, stress, and pain (mainly). 36% of these people reported that CBD worked “very well by itself”, while another 29.5% of people reported it worked “moderately well by itself”, and another 30.5% reported that it worked “well with conventional medicine”. In this study, a total of 95.5% of people reported that CBD worked well by itself and with conventional medicine.
  • The first CBD based medicine was approved in the UK in 2011 – Sativex, a CBD and THC based medicine was approved for the treatment of chronic pain and muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).

While the research does need to catch up a bit, it’s clear that there are some people who seriously stand behind CBD as a relief for chronic pain. Thousands of Americans rely on it for pain management, whether by itself or with traditional medications.

Does CBD Oil Work for Arthritis?

As you might have guessed, because CBD has such positive effects on inflammation and pain, it has also become a good source of daily relief for people with arthritis.

What makes CBD particularly good for arthritis pain is the fact that it works in the body on multiple levels. It affects not just your tissues, but your brain, neurotransmitters, and overall levels of cannabinoids in your system, which regulate and interact with your ECS.

Basically, this means that CBD works to treat and manage arthritis pain in a cohesive way that helps you get results, with mild side effects.

Best of all: CBD is affordable compared to most traditional medicines, and it’s very safe when compared to a lot of other medications on the market, with very mild side effects. Lastly, because it comes in so many different forms, you can easily find the best way to take it for your pain.

For example: some people with arthritis prefer CBD patches, salves, or creams for treating specific parts of the body. This provides a higher dosage, quicker relief, and a more manageable way to manage your chronic pain.

One of the largest struggles for cancer patients is dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy and other treatments. They often make most people experience extreme nausea, headaches, insomnia, and more. Cannabidiol and other cannabinoids have recently been found to help mitigate and reduce cancer risks as well as side effects:

  • CBD has been shown to slow and reduce tumor growth in animals – A 2019 study showed significant evidence that the use of cannabinoids may be effective for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
  • CBD may also inhibit the spread of colorectal cancer cells – A 2014 study showed that, “CBD BDS and CBD reduced cell proliferation in tumoral, but not in healthy, cells.” This same study also concluded that, “CBD BDS attenuates colon carcinogenesis and inhibits colorectal cancer cell proliferation via CB1 and CB2 receptor activation.”
  • It also reduced the proliferation and invasion of breast cancer cells – This 2012 study found that “Importantly, CBD appears to be interacting through a cellular system that regulates the expression of key transcriptional factors (e.g., Id-1) that control breast cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.”

Overall, what we know about CBD tells us that it is a great treatment for pain and inflammation. But, these studies also tell us a bit more about its ability to fight tumors and cancer cells, potentially making it a great start for further cancer research and medicine in the future.

Does CBD Oil Work for Seizures and Epilepsy?

One of the most important recent discoveries in the world of CBD is the benefits it can have for people with epilepsy and similar seizure disorders. Over the past few years, there have been multiple studies around this theory – here’s what you should know:

  • CBD significantly reduces seizures in patients with severe forms of epilepsy – This 2018 study found a “39 percent drop in seizure frequency in patients with a different rare form of epilepsy, Dravet syndrome.”
  • More evidence to suggest CBD and cannabinoids help with seizure disorders – This 2017 study found that “there is now for the first time class 1 evidence that CBD improves seizure control when added on to other AEDs in patients with two difficult-to-treat epileptic encephalopathies”. The two disorders in question: Dravet syndrome, and Lennox-Gaustaut syndrome.
  • Clinical trials on humans conclude the safety and efficacy of CBD for seizure disorders – This 2019 study found that CBD is a safe alternative to many AEDs (commonly used medications for these disorders). It also showed that cannabinoids work well with these existing medications to yield better results. Lastly, it concluded that the side effects of CBD are very mild, and can easily be reduced by modulating the dosage.
  • Epidoliex has been approved by the FDA for treating seizure conditions – In 2018, Epidoliex has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of seizure conditions in the USA.

Overall, the used of CBD in the treatment of epilepsy is one of the most well documented medical uses to date. Many studies have been done that document the benefits it has for treating these conditions, and the community seems to agree with the evidence.

Other CBD FAQ

While we are on the topic of whether CBD works or not, let’s take a look at some other common CBD products and the results people have gotten from them.

Do CBD gummies work?

Yes. For the most part, results with CBD really depend on the factors we listed above in this article. CBD gummies and edibles are preferred by a lot of users because they’re easy to remember, easy to dose, and they taste great. Overall, they are effective when taken on a daily basis for whole-body relief. We recommend them for people who need low to medium potency.

Do CBD tinctures work?

Yes. CBD tinctures are one of the most common ways that people choose to take cannabidiol because they are convenient, effective, and provide long-lasting full-body relief for at medium to high doses. Also, they come in a variety of flavors and strengths and are easy to dose. Furthermore, they make for a great solution for people just getting started with CBD.

Does CBD isolate work?

Yes. CBD isolate is the strongest form of CBD that you can purchase on the market. People with need for strong doses prefer it for adding to their existing regiment. It can be added to all sorts of other cannabidiol products such as skincare products or oils – making it very versatile. It also has the best value in terms of price per milligram of cannabidiol.

Does CBD vape work?

Yes, but we don’t typically recommend CBD vape because vaping is dangerous, and can have some negative side effects that are not present in other products. Overall, it is effective, delivering a quick, full-body relief that lasts a decent amount of time but not all day. It also has tons of flavor options, potencies, and different ways that you can smoke or vape it – making it nice for people looking to mix things up.
