Ultimate Guide to CBD Edibles

ultimate guide to cbd edibles
February 3, 2020 By Kyle Broussard

CBD quickly went from being an unknown, untrusted, and entirely new way of getting the benefits of hemp oil – to being something you see literally everywhere. Shops, commercials, drug stores, even some of your friends have probably tried to push some on you.

But there’s a problem for people who are new to the CBD world – there are seemingly unlimited options in terms of how to take CBD, making it difficult to find the right one for your needs. On top of that, you have so many questions, and there seems to be very few answers.

At HelpingPot, our goal is to help give you the right information you need to find the best product for your needs. We believe in building a community around knowledge, understanding, value, and a mutual love for all things hemp, CBD, and cannabis.

In this guide, we will take a look at one of the most common and tasty ways to get your daily dose of cannabidiol – CBD Edibles

We will answer some common questions you have, such as:

There’s a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get started!

what are cbd edibles

What Are CBD Edibles?

An edible is something you consume. A CBD edible is simply a tastier, easier way to consume CBD by eating it (ingestion). There are many types of different CBD edibles, with new ones being thought up every day. Some of the most common types of cannabidiol edibles include:

  • CBD Gummies
  • CBD Candy
  • CBD Losenges
  • CBD Protein Bars

People prefer these types of edibles because they are sweet, tasty, and offer a more playful way to take CBD on a daily basis without getting sick of the bland taste of traditional CBD oil or tinctures.

There are also other types of edibles such as drinks, health bars, powders, and more! But generally, these are the most common and affordable ones you will find on the market today.

But what is CBD? Without getting too in-depth, CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid that is found in hemp and cannabis plants. It is known to affect you endocannabinoid system (ECS) in your body in order to release neurotransmitters that affect:

  • Inflammation
  • Reproduction
  • Fertility
  • Sleep
  • Energy Levels
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Memory

This is why so many people recommend CBD for so many different ailments, and also why so many people report feeling positive benefits from using it.

On top of that, CBD is non-toxic, and as of right now – there is no known lethal dose in humans. For the most part, the worst side effects you may feel from taking it are: mood swings, headache, minor nausea, and fatigue.

Want to learn more about CBD, what it is, and how it works in the body? These subjects are a bit out of scope for this particular article, but you can learn more about them here:

Are CBD edibles legal? For the most part, yes. There are a few states that are highly critical of CBD products, but for the most part they are completely legal in the United States as long as they follow the standards put in place by the 2014 Farm Bill (from an industrial hemp plant with less than 0.3% THC content).

how are cbd edibles made

How Are CBD Edibles Made?

It all depends. Some CBD edibles are made using broad-spectrum CBD oil that is derived from hemp plants, while others are made from full-spectrum CBD oil in order to give a more comprehensive dosage of cannabinoids.

Depending on the type of edible, there are different processes for infusing the CBD – much like baking and cooking. For the most part though, CBD edibles are made using either CBD isolate – a pure, crystalline version of the compound that looks like sugar, or CBD oil.

It’s also good to note that the best CBD brands make a very good effort to maintain consistent lab reports of their batches – to ensure safety, consistency, and accuracy when labeling. In fact, most CBD companies take more precautions and measurements when producing and labeling their products than a lot of the food companies we buy from on a regular basis.

While the CBD industry is still somewhat of the “Wild West”, being unregulated, many of the most trusted brands are taking the necessary steps to prepare for FDA regulation – which seems almost inevitable at this point. This is good news for people looking to use CBD for daily relief – because it helps bring peace of mind that the edibles and CBD products you buy are safe, as long as they come from a trusted source.

why choose cbd edibles

Why Choose CBD Edibles?

Honestly, the #1 reason most people choose CBD edibles over other forms of cannabidiol is simply because of the taste. Hemp oil and CBD tinctures have a very noticeable and unforgettable taste. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s a lingering one that can stay in your mouth for hours – leaving a green, earthy aftertaste that can be unbearable for some people.

But, when you make your daily supplement taste as good as candy, it becomes difficult to forget to take it – heck, you might even look forward to it ;)!

Another reason people prefer CBD edibles is that they provide an excellent way to take a specified amount of CBD every single time. Most edibles come in packaging that specifically labels exactly how many milligrams of cannabidiol is in each edible, making it easy to take the same dose regularly or adjust your dosage as needed to experiment and find what works best for you.

Lastly, edibles come in tons of shapes, sizes, and flavors – so there is something for literally everyone! They are easy to take, taste great, and give you something to look forward to taking that is hard to forget about, but easy to dose.

different types of cbd edibles

What Are the Different Types of CBD Edibles?

Depending on what kind of sweet tooth you have, there is an option for just about everyone. Here are some of the tastiest and most common CBD edibles:

CBD Gummies

These little guys are much like the nutritional supplement gummies you may be used to. They come in all sorts of flavors, from sour to sweet, and everything in between. Some come in the traditional gummy bear shape, while others are a bit more creative. Overall, they taste great, and tend to have no aftertaste or hemp taste.

Most gummies come in 5mg-30mg doses, with anywhere from 30-60+ gummies per container, depending on the size you buy. They come in full and broad spectrum, with tons of assorted flavors. Usually, just 1-2 of them per day will do.

CBD Lozenges

While these aren’t your traditional lozenges meant to help with a sore throat or a cold, but they do help with inflammation and bringing the relief you need. Much like gummies, they come in a lot of flavors – from citrus to cherry, and more!

When it comes to dosing, CBD lozenges also make things easy, with most of them ranging from 5mg-30mg as well, with a recommendation of 1-2 per day.

Keep in mind: we do always recommend that you speak to your doctor before taking any CBD products.

CBD Candy

Who doesn’t love a nice tasty piece of candy? Now you can get your daily relief in the form of your favorite candy! Whether it’s chocolate or sweets, there is a little something out there for everyone when it comes to CBD candy.

The most popular type of candy is probably be CBD infused chocolate, but there’s something out there for everyone. On top of that, there are different flavors of chocolate including mint, cherry, dark, and milk chocolate.

More CBD Edibles

These aren’t your only options though, when it comes to CBD edibles, there are tons of other choices out there. We chose to include these in this “other” section because they are a bit different than most traditional edibles – they either have no taste, or are meant to be added to food or water in order to make it easier to consume than traditional forms of CBD.

Here are some of your other options:

CBD Capsules and CBD Pills are exactly what you would expect. They typically go down easy, are about the same size as normal pills or capsules, and tend to have higher CBD concentrations than other types of edibles – around 10mg-60mg per pill or capsule.

Water Soluble CBD is pretty cool because it gives you the option to add CBD to just about any liquid you are drinking. This type of cannabidiol comes in flavored and non-flavored options, and comes in a fine powder. Some CBD Isolate is water soluble as well. CBD isolate is 99% CBD, making it stronger than some water soluble CBD solutions – especially the flavored ones.

the benefits of cbd edibles

What Are the Benefits of CBD Edibles?

All types of CBD have some major benefits for users, especially those suffering from chronic pain and inflammation or related health conditions. Some of the most commonly documented and reported benefits of CBD include:

  • Pain relief
  • Inflammation relief
  • Help with cancer related symptoms
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Improving focus and energy level

On top of these traditional benefits of CBD, edibles also have some benefits that makes them the preference for millions of Americans using CBD for daily relief. These benefits of CBD edibles include:

  • Great tasting
  • Tons of flavor options
  • Easy to remember
  • Easy to dose
  • Tons of dosage options
  • Affordable

Overall, CBD edibles are a great way to get the relief you need, without having to sacrifice taste or deal with a boring old tincture or oil on a daily basis. On top of that, the great taste and colorful large bottles make it easy to remember to take it on a daily basis, and might even make taking your CBD something you look forward too!

side effects of cbd edibles

What Are the Side Effects of CBD Edibles?

The beauty of CBD is that there really aren’t that many side effects of taking it on a daily basis – at least as far as scientific research has shown. For the most part, these side effects are only experienced by people taking them in high doses:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability

Until you begin taking them on a regular basis, it’s hard to know if you will experience these side effects. Most users don’t, especially at low doses – and even when they do, the side effects are usually very mild.

Keep in mind: there are some medications that CBD does not do well with, and for this reason, you should always speak to your doctor before taking CBD.

how do cbd edibles make you feel

How Do CBD Edibles Make You Feel?

One misconception a lot of people have about CBD is that it has psychoactive effects (that “high” feeling associated with cannabis). This simply isn’t true, in fact, all legal CBD needs to be under 0.3% THC in order to be sold in the United States – which is far less than what is needed to make you feel psychoactive effects.

Other than that, and some of the common side effects listed in the section above, users report CBD edibles make them feel:

  • Improved focus
  • Improved energy levels
  • Reduction in inflammation
  • Better pain management
  • Better sleep schedule

Many users report these to be long lasting benefits, making a noticeable difference in their daily routine. Of course, it will be different for everyone, and it also depends on the dosage you take, the ailments you have, your own body, and many other factors.

Are CBD Edibles Safe?

At the end of the day, it’s too early in the world of CBD to truly say “yes” to this question with science to back it – and at HelpingPot that is what we aim to bring you. But, with that being said, there is no know lethal dosage of CBD in humans, and ingesting what is considered to be too much by doctors and scientists will only result in the minor side effects listed in the sections above.

So, in short, yes – CBD edibles are safe. However, we still strongly recommend that you speak to your doctor before trying CBD, just to be sure you don’t affect any medications you are taking or health conditions you have. It will also help you to find the right dosage, which will help you get the best results.

Should I Talk to My Doctor Before Using CBD Edibles?

Yes. While CBD is non-toxic and usually has very minor side effects – if any at all, there are some medications and health conditions that don’t mix well with it. For that reason, we always recommend speaking with your doctor prior to taking any type of CBD.

In most states, yes. Technically, CBD is legal at the federal level as long as it passes the standards set forth by the Farm Bill of 2014 (comes from a hemp plant with less than 0.3% THC). However, there are a few states which still have some highly specific and strict laws against CBD, so it’s best to be sure before purchasing some for yourself.

How many CBD edibles should I take?

It all depends on a few key factors:

  • Your symptoms
  • Your weight
  • Your body composition
  • Your metabolism
  • Your tolerance

Those are the main factors affecting how much CBD you should take. Generally speaking, you want to take about 5-15mg per day if you are just starting or have minor symptoms that need relief, 15-30mg per day for mild symptoms, 30-60mg for major symptoms, and 60mg+ for severe symptoms.

To truly find the best dose for you takes a combination of working with your doctor, finding the right CBD product for your needs, and then experimenting a bit with your dosage to get it dialed in.

Pro Tip: Keeping a CBD journal can really make your life easy when it comes to finding the perfect dosage for your daily relief needs. That’s why we made the HelpingPot CBD Journal to help you keep track of your progress, results, and find what works best for you!

Do CBD edibles get you high?

No. Most CBD edibles that are made in the United States are made from hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC, meaning they do not contain enough THC (the main psychoactive compound in cannabis) to get you high, or give you that psychoactive experience.

Does CBD show up on a drug test?

No. Even if a tiny bit of THC does make it into your CBD, it is such a negligible amount that it won’t show up on a drug test. Think of it like the small particles of other ingredients that make it into foods we eat regularly. If you are really concerned about it, and don’t want to leave it to chance, you can always choose Hemp Seed Oil, Hemp Oil, or Broad Spectrum CBD Oil which do not contain any THC – giving you the relief you need and the peace of mind when it comes time to take a drug test.

Are CBD edibles good for pain?

It depends on your symptoms, but in general, anything that is good for inflammation is good for pain management – and CBD is a great way to reduce inflammation. On top of that, the reviews from people with arthritis, chronic pain, cancer like symptoms, MS, and other diseases that cause them pain are undeniable. Millions of Americans look to CBD edibles for their daily pain relief.

Of course, your results will depend on your consistency, your symptoms, your body, and other factors including the dosage you take, and your overall receptiveness to the CBD edibles you choose.

Are CBD edibles good for anxiety?

Yes, they can be. Many users report feeling more calm throughout the day with reduced anxiety. Also, CBD is known to regulate mood. Sometimes this can work in the opposite direction – with doses that are too high resulting in increased anxiety or moodiness, but these side effects are usually minor and do not occur often.

What are full-spectrum CBD edibles?

Full spectrum CBD edibles are edibles made with full spectrum CBD – which is CBD derived from the entire hemp plant. This allows more cannabinoids in, along with a bit more THC than most broad spectrum CBD products (but still within the legal limit). Some people prefer this type of edible because they offer more relief. Many believe this is due to what scientists call the “entourage effect”  which assumes that combining cannabinoids provides superior relief, as they compliment one another while working with your body.

What do CBD edibles taste like?

It all depends. That’s one of the best things about CBD edibles – they come in so many forms, flavors, and doses that there has to be the perfect one out there for you! Most have fruity flavors, while some come in various flavors of chocolate. Almost all brands do a great job of masking the aftertaste of CBD and hemp to the point that it is not even noticeable, which is a huge upside – but it may make it hard to keep your hands off of them ;).

How long do CBD edibles last?

It depends on a lot of factors. Estimates from recent scientific studies suggest that CBD can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 days in your body depending on your metabolism, dosage, and the method of ingestion. Some types of CBD completely bypass the bloodstream, while others are absorbed directly into the blood to provide longer lasting, whole body relief. If you are really trying to narrow down exactly how long CBD stays in your system, it’s best to talk to your doctor.
